Today is National Buy a Newspaper Day.
In honor of this day, I feel the urge to serenade the Duluth News Tribune, my local newspaper of the last six weeks. Here are the top five reasons why I love the Duluth News Tribune:
5. Daily shipping news. How else will I know what ore ship is going to block my way off Park Point?
4. The Swap Section in the classifieds. Each swap ad is a story. "2 Good riding horses, for Honda or Polaris ATV or pontoon." "Wood for horse buggy." "Camouflage hunting bow for wolf decorations." "2 Cemetery lots with vault for an automobile." "1980 Chevy for beef." And perhaps the saddest one today: "Full size bed for a twin bed."
3. The game page has sudoku, word jumble, a crossword, and the cryptoquip.
2. Top news reporting I can really use, like today's lead story: "Ticketed - and fuming about it." Which lists all the bizarre Duluth parking laws (like not parking in the same spot for more than 24 hours), and what the common man has to say about it, such as, "I paid the stupid ticket...but I wasn't happy doing so."
And the number one reason I love the Duluth News Tribune...
1. It's waiting on my front doorstep every morning by 6 o'clock, even if it's 20 below zero.

ReplyDeleteYou should see the movie "Shipping News" with Kevin Spacey and Julianne Moore. It sounds so similar to Duluth, it's a little scary. -Kevin

ReplyDeleteThe twin bed ad reminded me of one of Hemingway's short stories. It was only a six-word classified: "For sale: Baby shoes, never worn." Also sad, sorry.
